On Facebook, Franklin Graham is standing by his guy Trump, promoting the hell out of Donnie's appearance at the "religious freedom" conference earlier in the week and only barely mentioning "his enemies calling for impeachment".
Graham is doing an eight-stop tour in NC in the first two weeks of October with his "Decision America" tour. Though billed at the Bill Graham Evangelical Association website as a "call back to God", the Decision America tour first popped up in 2016 as a $9 million effort to drive evangelical Trump voters to the ballot box.
Franklin Graham might seem like a footnote or sideshow in the Trump era, but don't forget he, along with corrupt Jerry Falwell, Jr, have been the biggest drivers of evangelical support behind Trump after Graham's meetings with Putin, Russian religious leaders, and oligarchs before the 2016 race.
NC reporters might want to attend some of these Decision America events to see how much Graham is pushing Jesus and how much he's circling wagons around a flailing Trump. And, while they're at it, they might want to dive deeper into Graham's meetings in Russia earlier this year, signed off on by Pence and official and the State Department.
"According to interviews in Russian media and photos on his own social media accounts, Graham, currently the chair of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, traveled to Moscow earlier this month to meet with a number of prominent Russian figures. Most notably, Graham had a sit-down meeting with Russian Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, who is close to President Vladimir Putin and who has been sanctioned by the U.S. since 2014 for his role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine."
What was the purpose of this meeting? Was there a sudden influx of cash into the Graham organization for his Decision America tour or other political activities? And what was Franklin Graham really doing during his travels in the Ukraine in 2015?
Graham's ministry is doing work in several parts of the world, but why does Franklin Graham keep talking with corrupt leaders and oligarchs Russia? Hey, NC reporters, get yourself some foreign language speakers to start combing through news archives.
A footnote: I remembered, when Graham was doing the Decision America tour in 2016 during the election, he had a specific website set up for it at decisionamerica.org. It was also clear from that website, at least from my recollections, that it was a political organization separate from Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelical Association. The domain still exists, but redirects to the Billy Graham Evangelical Association. Reporters might want to dig into the funding for this effort and if Graham actually set up a separate non-profit for Decision America during the 2016 cycle.
