Good Practices Can Be Selfish

I was just browsing the UNC Health Care System employees CONNECTIONS - Special Transportation, Parking and Construction Issue. Yeah, I know.

UNC is in the midst of a Capital building boom that is just remarkable. My wife hates it, she grew up here and thinks there just isn't enough open space left. I agree to some extent, once again I think the hospitals and research buildings should be a minimum of 11 stories high with greenspace between stuffed with live oaks, magnolias, and lawn space.

Still, as a scientist, I know that UNC is expanding because its world-leading research is expanding. The two go hand in hand. Along with that expansion has come a change in travel, which I think is a good thing. UNC is moving all of its parking off campus, face it, you won't be able to park on campus in another 50 years. This leads to good and bad.
BAD:
* one-level parking lots throughout the county.

GOOD:
* Chapel Hill transit is free.
* As of 2007, TTA will be free for all SoM employees.

That is a great byproduct. It means that more people will do what I did and switch to riding the bus to and from work. That cuts down on single-passenger emissions and will inevitably lead to MORe transit down the line.

Comments

I'm in a minority

when I proclaim my desire for UNC to become MORE research-oriented.

I was at a recent healthcare symposium and our Senator seemed hell-bent on turning back the clock and making UNC's focus local healthcare. Forget that UNC research makes UNC healthcare better. Forget that UNC hospitals are not the problem, the state insurance is.

Build underground....

because you know scientists don't need sunlight to grow. (or ventilation for safety...or...or)

I grew up there too...(just first three years of my life, mind you)

I cringe everytime I go back because the beautiful campus is disappearing under all the concrete. Oh well...price of progress. But I don't like it.

Next time you come back

don't cringe, come for a visit with your Blue friends. We'd love to see you and we promise to steer you away from concrete. In fact, if you visit the Anglico abode, this is the view you'll get to enjoy!

PS I loved your comments to the Chairman. What a wacko that guy is!

This looks familiar...

Oh yes, it's where I'd LOVE To live.

This is another wonderful point.

I am betting that all of the chiller plants and ventilation plants and so on COULD be totally underground. There is already a vast network of underground tunnels and conduits, and some of the new buildings are sunk down a little, but why not dig a damn big whole and put half the building under there?

Good point.

Oooooo beautiful

My view will be trees (lots of them!) if we could get this house sold and the other built. Long...process. I have to finish painting first. I just want a huge dumpster and throw it all away and start over....but that's another rant for another day.
