Sarah Palin's Screen Test With Ted Stevens

John McCain knew he had to put Sarah Palin on the ticket when he saw how good she made Ted Stevens look on camera, how deferential she was to a crusty Republican and how much she reminds him of Patty Duke.

This is what McCain has in mind for the acceptance speech:

He divorced his first wife when she stopped looking like Patty Duke and started singing like her.

Conservative Dissonance and Sarah Palin

John McCain hates Sarah Palin's baby.

In this photo, John McCain is thinking to himself: "Hmmm. This looked better on paper."

Imagine that you yourself are a 72 year old lifelong conservative. You're sitting in your barcalounger and your dutiful wife of fifty years is reading the new issue of People Magazine. You often sit like this in the evening. She reads and you watch "The O'Reilly Factor". You like it like this. In fact, you suffer a fair bit of discomfort if she wants to do anything anything different. You like things regular.

"What you reading?"

"It's an interview with that new girl John McCain's picked for his Vice President."

"Lemme see it."

Where they were was the Nutter Center college sports arena in Dayton, Ohio. And PEOPLE was there for an exclusive backstage interview with the McCain and Palin families suddenly joined in the campaign for the White House. Sarah Palin, in ruby red peep-toe platform heels that showed off a pink French-style pedicure, first ducked into a holding room to change the diaper of her just-up-from-a-nap 4 1/2-month-old son, Trig.

What does Governor Palin need to know about working with your dad?
MEGHAN: He likes to get up early in the morning and go. Seems like she likes to do that too. I guess with a baby...
JOHN MCCAIN: ... she has to be. (Laughter)
SARAH PALIN: Morning person. Yup. We don't sleep much. Too much to do. What I've had to do, though, is in the middle of the night, put down the BlackBerries and pick up the breast pump. Do a couple of things different and still get it all done.

Mr. Palin, what does Sen. McCain need to know about working with your wife?
TODD PALIN: She's a hard worker and she's not wired normal. (Laughter)

Breast pump?

Breast pump?

dick cheney breast pump

Dissonance. Exploit it.

ewwwwww...Republican leches

Cue SNL segment of of McCain the stalker

I wonder how...

The Family Focus and other extremist religious groups feel about Sarah Palin working so much while she has a baby and four other children at home.

Or, other conservatives for that matter. A good deal of Americans still believe that it's ok for a dad to work long hours with kids at home but the mother should be spending time with her children, taking care of them.

So, while she is on the road campaigning, her children will be back in Alaska.

Just sayin...it's going to be difficult to break through those traditional gender roles in the eyes of the more conservative voters.

As a progressive advocate for children and families,

I find it hard to compute this one. I'm all for working moms - seriously. However, this working mom has an infant with special needs who is still breastfeeding. He needs her. Sorry. I'm having a hard time getting behind it. I try not to judge other womens' choices, but I think this might be putting her career ahead of a child who needs her, and that disturbs me quite a bit.

Understand

I'm basically on the same page as you on this. Why do some Americans put career ambition before family? And, I'm not referring to those who don't have a choice but to work long hours in order to pay the bills and must leave their babies in the care of strangers or daycare (an institituional setting) in order to pay the bills but obviously, this is not the case for Sarah Palin.

Parenthood requires a lot of sacrifices and choices. What one chooses to sacrifice speaks to their character, imo.

Precisely

Here's a question for even the most rabidly progressive Mom among us:

Is this the most appropriate time for her to accept this job?

What's weird about the breast pump?

I don't think that Senator McCain doesn't care what's going on in the lives of Americans, I just think he doesn't know.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Big Dairy metaphor

Governors should be allowed to graze in open fields and feed their offspring, not be clamped to some heartless milking machine.

:)

What?

I <3 Patty Duke

This woman is no Patty Duke. She's an anti-science, anti-choice stage prop.

Jesus Swept, so you can come clean.

lmao!!!!!!!!!

Too funny.

I love how this VP pick is putting so much emphasis on McCain's age.

Funny and scary

The first thing that crossed my mind when I heard about McCain's pick was, "Oh shit. McCain just won the votes of six million Hillary supporters."

Forget about attacking her lack of experience: that won't matter to a lot of disgruntled Democrats and undecideds. It's her conservatism that needs to be highlighted, such as anti-choice, anti-gay marriage, etc.

I'm worried about this...

Global Warming denier,

which should pretty much send a message to anyone (much less Democrats) that she's a couple of sandwiches shy of a picnic. But...look at my comment below.

I sure as hell hope so, but

when people get worked up about something, they often become a single-issue voter.

Case in point: last year, I (and many others) had to expend a great deal of effort explaining to female liberal Democrats that Ron Paul was not their hero. Forget about his anti-abortion stance and his dream of repealing the Civil Rights Act: he's a Republican against the Iraq War, so he's "The Man".

They even used the argument that he couldn't possibly succeed in reversing Roe v Wade, so it's really not an issue. And even if he did, maybe it is a good idea to let the states decide.

I really don't want to sound sexist, but a lot of women thought they were about to see a woman in the White House, but now they have to wait four more years. Or do they?

Even more disturbing - McCain had only spoken to her twice

before he offered her this position. He doesn't know her, doesn't know anything about her, really.

How seriously can he be taking this?

Science and Palin don't mix.

In this area, if you like George W. Bush, you'll love Sarah Palin. Whatever else we may learn about the largely untested Palin, we already know that she would be an environmental disaster. She's one of the waning number of science-denying climate change "sceptics" who will grasp at any oil-industry funded fig leaf to cover up real research, as she did in citing ExxonMobil-funded "research" in attacking an endangered species listing.

She also falsely claimed that her own state's wildlife officials found no evidence to support the polar bears' endangered listing, despite statements from those same scientists contradicting her claim.

She opposed a state ballot measure which would have protected the state's salmon fisheries from metal mining pollution, because it could interfere with a proposed new gold mine.

Big polluters in Alaska must love Palin, and I don't doubt that those same special interests will come to love her nationwide during this campaign. But ordinary citizens who want to stop environmental disasters? They need to know the truth about her background and positions.

Palin's backdoor to wildlife protection

Palin also spent millions of state money on an effort to crush a bill that would block aerial shooting of wolves. The act itself is apparently banned by Alaska's Airborne Hunting Act of 1972, but Palin had successfully found a workaround by claiming the wolves as "predators" simply being controlled by the state. Concerned voters caught on, so Palin deemed it necessary to toss hundreds of millions of state money in a campaign against it.

Her crazy gun love is ruining her nonexistent fiscal conservativeness. This woman's a joke.
