Judge sets September date for Robin Hayes' bribery trial

The criminal trial against North Carolina mega-donor Greg Lindberg and state Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes is tentatively slated for September.

Lindberg, who is far and away North Carolina's largest political donor, Hayes and two Lindberg associates were indicted in March and accused of trying to bribe state Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey by funneling campaign donations through the state GOP. All four men have pleaded not guilty.

For now they've all pleaded not guilty. But see, that's the thing about conspiracies; the weakest link always snaps under pressure. I just had the weirdest mental image, of Robin Hayes lifting weights in the exercise yard and getting prison tats...

Former Governor Jim Hunt Rallies for Larry Kissell

Former Governor Jim Hunt campaigned for Larry Kissell in Richmond County at the Rockingham Speedway. According to a friend in attendance, as the crowd of around 300 filled the event area Hunt said he didn't know there was a candidate in North Carolina who could draw a crowd that size.

Hunt and Kissell shook hands with supporters and greeted old friends in the Speedway garages before the rally began. Hunt explained why he supports Kissell in his race to the House of Representatives.

Please take just a few minutes to help Larry Kissell win the DCCC contest running today. Larry won last cycle and the DCCC sent out over 3 million fundraising emails for Larry. In 2006 the candidates had a month to plan their day of action. This cycle, they've had under a week. The winner is expected to raise over $100,000 on the fundraising email.

Larry Kissell Headlines DCCC Red-to-Blue Candidate List

Somebody get Robin Hayes a change of knickers. I think he just wet himself. What has Robin Hayes flat out running scared?

It isn't what. It's who. It's Larry Kissell, that's who.

Larry Kissell, his campaign team and his enthusiastic supporters from 2006 have finally been joined by the DCCC and many Democrats throughout the district who held back their support last cycle because they didn't think Larry could win. People are scrambling to jump on the Kissell bandwagon and the only thing to say to that is, "Thank you!"

SEIU Poll - Kissell Leads Hayes by 2 in UNINFORMED vote

Holy Mother of Pearl. I can barely catch my breath. Those of you who went through the Kissell campaign ups and downs with me last cycle know just how much I love Larry Kissell. Do you remember those days where we did our best to make something positive out of poll numbers? Those days are over. With name recognition of 78% Robin Hayes is polling 2 points below Larry Kissell in the uninformed poll question with only 1% indicating they would vote for a different candidate.

I'll be adding more in a minute with links and crosstabs and all that lovely goodness you need to rip this poll apart, but for now I'm doing a happy dance and enjoying something we only dreamt about last cycle.

Most BlueNC long-timers are Larry Kissell fans. Many of us volunteered to help the Kissell campaign in 2006 and others gave money and vocal public support. We were all pretty much heartbroken when the final vote was counted.

Larry decided quickly he was in for another round. So, here we go. Welcome to my dear friend, Larry Kissell.

Believe it or not it has been almost two years since our first interview with Larry Kissell. Not long ago James offered John Autry, Larry's primary opponent, a live-blog opportunity and now it's Larry's turn. Please join us tomorrow evening, Thursday, January 3, 2008 from 6pm until 7pm for a chance to ask Larry about this cycle's campaign and the issues that are important to the people of the 8th District.

Final Fundraising Push for Kissell, Adame & other NC Dem Challengers

The presidential candidates are busy maxing out their donors and making it hard on all down ticket candidates to raise money in the process. That's why I'm appealing to you one last time before the end of the quarter to help the challengers in our North Carolina congressional races. I know the incumbents are having a hard time raising money as well, but they have far more contacts and larger donor bases, so I will leave them out of this particular plea for funds.

Ambassador Joe Wilson shows his True Colors at Kissell Fundraiser

This past Saturday, Ambassador Joe Wilson came to Charlotte, NC to support Larry Kissell in his second bid to unseat Robin Hayes in North Carolina's 8th Congressional District.

I had not had the pleasure of meeting Joe Wilson prior to Saturday's event and was honestly expecting the man to be just a wee bit of a stuffed shirt. I found instead, a man who is generous, patient and funny. He did not leave the event until he had met each person who desired an introduction, stood for pictures with all waiting in line and signed every spare scrap of paper, every book and every Creative Loafing shoved in front of him. That's quite a chore when the total attendance is over 200 people.
